Deadline’s in a week. So let’s finish this thing.
Wikis. They’re cool. I like to use the word as though it’s a verb. “Let me wiki that.” I use wikis mostly to satisfy the yearning pop culture trivia bits of my brain. (yeah, I know, that’s almost the entire thing.)
I gotta agree with Maggie though. The aesthetic part of wikis is kinda, severely, lacking. Which is pretty much why I wasn’t that impressed with any of the sample library wikis connected to this exercise.
We do have a staff wiki at the Dublin Branch that ended up being super-useful when we were trying to contact staff and stop them from coming to work during the End of Days/Windstorm/Blackout in September. We’re so Green & Web 2.0 at Dublin, that we didn’t even have a paper version of the staff roster printed out. So I used my cell & phoned a friend, giving her access to the our wiki so she could relay every staff member’s phone number to me. Without the wiki, (and a fully charged cell-phone!) all that information would’ve been unaccessible.
Thus far, I’ve had a less than participative, one way relationship with wikis, just looking up desired info, not contributing anything via writing or editing. I imagine that will change soon though. Who Knows? Maybe even in my next L&P update!
